Anthropic announced a $150 million commitment over three years on October 8 to support the Genesis Mission, a federal initiative to accelerate scientific and technological discovery through AI. The company says the funding will make Claude available to more than 15 participating agencies, including NASA, the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
The pledge covers access to Anthropic’s tools and help for researchers using them. Its announcement gives a total value and a planned reach of several hundred research projects, while leaving individual project allocations unspecified.
What Anthropic promises
Over the next three years, Anthropic says it will:
- Provide Claude, Claude Code and API credits to several hundred Genesis Mission research projects.
- Work with agencies and national laboratories on the administration’s science priorities, including fusion energy and quantum computing.
- Provide training, onboarding and technical support to participating scientists, and help agencies new to the mission start their first projects.
Anthropic announced the commitment at the Science: A New Golden Age Summit, hosted by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy in Washington, DC.
The company says it first announced its partnership with the Department of Energy and the Genesis Mission last December. Since then, it says it has worked with the department to bring Claude to scientists across the national laboratories. The new pledge extends that effort to more participating agencies.
Part of a broader science program
Anthropic places the pledge alongside its other research initiatives. It says it launched Claude Science earlier this year as a workbench that integrates tools and packages researchers commonly use, and opened 10,000 free and discounted Claude seats for academic scientists.
The company also points to its expanded AI for Science credit program and a research preview of the Model Hardware Standard, a shared specification for AI agents to operate laboratory instruments safely. The Genesis announcement gives no measured research outcomes for the new commitment.
