OpenAI is moving ChatGPT into office work that overlaps with its partner Microsoft’s software business. At DevDay on September 29, it announced shared workspaces, a document editor and collaborative slides, according to TechCrunch’s report. Slides will arrive in the coming weeks.
Which office tasks ChatGPT covers
Space is a shared workspace where colleagues can work with ChatGPT and Dots, OpenAI’s new agent personas. It keeps pages and files together. Sam Altman described giving a page instructions to check a team channel and update itself with the information it finds.
Pages is the document editor. OpenAI says users can write, research, generate charts, create images and visualize information within a page. That puts it in the same category of office work as Microsoft Word and Google Docs, with people and agents collaborating on the document.
Collaborative slides targets presentation work associated with PowerPoint. Users will be able to create slides through a ChatGPT conversation, then edit and comment with colleagues and agents. TechCrunch updated its report to clarify that Slides is still awaiting release.
Microsoft and Salesforce have also been adding AI products, TechCrunch reports. OpenAI’s move makes competition over everyday work more direct, even as it remains Microsoft’s partner.
