Sony has introduced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, to bring AI graphics upscaling to the standard PS5. The technology comes from Project Amethyst, Sony’s AI graphics collaboration with AMD. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei received patches on October 1 that add it as a graphics option.
In Sony’s announcement, QSSR combines a streamlined neural network with an implementation tuned for the PS5. Sony says it improves image detail and stability. The company plans to offer the library broadly to PlayStation developers.
Different hardware means different resolution targets
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR, is the existing AI upscaler on PS5 Pro. Sony says its processing demands had previously prevented the company from bringing that experience to the standard console.
The Verge reports that Digital Foundry’s early testing points to a processing limit. The standard PS5 lacks dedicated machine learning silicon, and QSSR appears slower than PSSR. The report suggests expecting output closer to upscaled 1440p on PS5 than the upscaled 4K common on PS5 Pro.
Sony graphics engineer Daniel Craig told Digital Foundry that PS5 developers need to adjust both render resolution and presentation targets for each graphics mode. He also described QSSR as a drop-in replacement for games that already support PSSR, with a few days of tuning. That gives those developers a shorter route to adding the option.
