Amazon has blocked Meta’s Muse AI assistant from buying products on Amazon.com. Muse users began seeing an error Sunday night that described the assistant as an unauthorized AI agent and said its continued access violated Amazon’s Conditions of Use.
The immediate result is simple. People using Muse must shop somewhere else if they want the assistant to complete the purchase for them. The dispute also shows that an agent’s ability to find a product does not give it permission to transact with the merchant selling it.
Amazon controls the checkout boundary
TechCrunch notes that Amazon has no legal obligation to give Muse access. Amazon also has its own foundation models and a widely used inference platform, which gives the block a competitive dimension.
There is an operational reason for caution too. If Muse places a bad order, Amazon would have to handle the response from both the customer and the vendor. TechCrunch reports that Muse has a comparatively low hallucination rate, but that rate is still above zero.
That leaves Amazon with the customer-facing work of correcting an order generated through another company’s assistant. The source does not report an agreement between Amazon and Meta that assigns responsibility for those failures or gives Muse an approved transaction method.
