TikTok announced an AI Shopping Assistant and one-click brand checkout on October 5. The pair brings product questions and purchases into the social app, with Shopify and Stripe among its partners. TikTok’s own implementation guide says access is through eligibility-based testing opportunities, so shoppers and merchants should treat this as a test rollout.
The announcement puts conversational shopping inside a platform where people already discover products through videos. TechCrunch reports that the tools extend TikTok’s commerce effort beyond its TikTok Shop marketplace and could keep users from turning to outside assistants such as ChatGPT for product questions.
Product answers come from the merchant
TikTok says Shopping Assistant remembers needs and context during a conversation and helps with product details, shipping, sizing and availability. Its business explainer describes a chat window on the product page inside TikTok’s in-app browser. The assistant answers using information the merchant provides.
That explainer also describes a path from the chat to checkout on the merchant’s website, still inside the in-app browser. This matters because the assistant and the new native checkout are separate tools, with different requirements.
Buy Direct uses saved payment details
Buy Direct is TikTok’s native checkout option. TikTok says it lets users purchase directly from a brand in the For You feed with one click. The business guide explains that it uses stored payment methods and saved addresses and includes in-app order tracking. The brand remains the merchant of record for the transaction.
Buy Direct requires an integration with the Universal Commerce Protocol, which TikTok describes as rules for communication between AI agents and merchant systems. Its announcement names Salesforce, Shopify, Shoplazza and Stripe among the commerce and payment partners.
Advertisers interested in the tools must contact their TikTok sales partner to discuss eligibility and testing. The business guide gives no date for general availability.
