Google’s Universal Cart is rolling out in the U.S. across Search and the Gemini app on October 15. The tool saves products from multiple retailers in one place and alerts shoppers when prices drop or items return to stock. Google previewed it at I/O in May, TechCrunch reports.
The launch adds a shared shopping list to Google’s search and chat tools. A product saved while browsing in Search remains in the cart when the shopper returns through Gemini, according to Google’s announcement. That gives shoppers a way to resume a purchase they put off earlier.
Saved products, alerts and payment help
Google says Universal Cart draws on its Shopping Graph to monitor price and inventory changes. The cart can send notifications about a saved item’s lower price or renewed availability.
It also uses Google Wallet information to help shoppers choose between payment methods based on card benefits. Google says it can show relevant promo codes inside the cart. These are the company’s descriptions of the tools; the launch posts provide no measured results for savings or alert accuracy.
The checkout route depends on the merchant
Checkout uses the Universal Commerce Protocol, which Google introduced earlier this year to help agents and retailers work together. Google describes two routes. Shoppers can pay with Google Pay inside the cart at supported stores, or transfer items to the merchant’s cart and finish on its website.
Google names Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and many Shopify merchants as examples for these checkout experiences. The merchant remains the seller of record and provides order confirmations and customer support under either route.
