Apple discloses deal to hire Huxe staff and license its personalized audio tech

Apple's Huxe agreement points to an interest in personalized AI audio. The deal leaves open which employees will join and what Apple will build.

Apple has agreed to make employment offers to certain Huxe employees and receive a non-exclusive license to the personalized audio startup’s intellectual property. MacRumors reports that Apple disclosed the arrangement to the European Commission on June 9. The filing leaves open who will join Apple.

The agreement gives Apple a route to recruit people with experience in AI-generated audio. Huxe’s founders previously worked on Google’s NotebookLM team. The arrangement covers hiring rights and a technology license rather than an outright purchase of Huxe.

Huxe combined briefings with conversation

Huxe generated audio briefings based on users’ emails, calendars and interests, according to MacRumors. It also made podcasts about topics listeners wanted to explore.

Huxe’s own site describes an audio interface that lets listeners interrupt to ask for another explanation or more detail. It also describes a screen that presents context as the audio mentions it. Those capabilities went beyond generating an audio file for someone to play.

Huxe announced its shutdown on May 21. Its notice set May 28 as the end of audio service and May 29 for permanent deletion of user data. The site says the team would move on and stop developing the product.

TechCrunch reports that the filing does not disclose Apple’s plans.
