OpenAI and Synopsys announced a multi-year agreement on September 30 to develop GPT-Synopsys, a specialized model that will operate electronic design automation tools for chip design. The companies plan to share revenue and sell the service together.
What engineers would delegate
Synopsys says engineers will assign design objectives to agents that run its tools, read results and change designs. Engineers will review the resulting work. Targets include power, performance and area, plus timing and verification closure.
The proposed advance is specialization in tool use. Synopsys contrasts this with existing agents that connect general-purpose models to chip-design software.
How the service would run
GPT-Synopsys will run on OpenAI infrastructure and integrate with Synopsys.ai and Synopsys Autopilot. The service will bundle compute, the model and tool licenses. Synopsys says early customer engagements are underway.
OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman links the project to improving chips that power AI. The release names neither Nvidia nor AMD as customers. It supplies no benchmark results, pricing or launch date.
